The Heineken cup rolled back into town as Leinster took on last season's beaten finalists Leicester Tigers. Leicester have a good recent record against Leinster having beaten them the last two times they met, the last one of those a defeat at Lansdowne Road in 2005. Both sides knew that a good start to this group was essential to their respective hopes of qualifying with difficult tests against Edinburgh and Toulouse in store.

Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Leicester Tigers

Leinster and Leicester have a rich Heineken Cup history having met eight times in total. In the first five years of the competition they were drawn in the same pool a remarkable three times. Those six meetings were split three wins apiece, including two famous wins at Donnybrook in '97 and '99. Since then they have met twice in the quarter-finals but Leicester won handily both times. Leicester won 29 - 18 at Welford Road in 2002 but it's the 2005 defeat at home that will be freshest in Leinster fans minds. On this occasion Leinster were playing in front of a full house in Lansdowne Road. However Leinster never showed up and Leicester steamrollered over them in Declan Kidney's last game in charge. If anything, the 29 - 13 score flattered Leinster.

So after a long summer of worrying about it's very existence, the Heineken Cup returns this weekend. The Heineken Cup has a special place in the hearts of Irish rugby fans as it's credited with inspiring the revival in Irish rugby that we've seen in the last eight years. In the grim early days of professionalism, Ireland looked certain to remain the paupers of European rugby. But the success of the provinces made players believe that not only could they compete with the English and French clubs, they could beat them. The confidence at provincial level fed into the national team and the wins came.

General News: OLSC Leinster - Leicester Supporters Invitation

As you may have seen in last week's match programme, the OLSC has invited supporters of the Leicester Tigers to a Friday night get together with Leinster fans in the Horse Show House in Ballsbridge. The festivities are planned to kick off from 7.30pm. The usual discounts apply on production of your membership card/season ticket. Hopefully we will see some of you there.

Match Report: London Wasps vs Leinster Rugby

Adams Park, High Wycombe was the setting of this Heineken Cup quarter final between the 2004 champions Wasps and Leinster. Leinster were without Brian O'Driscoll and the side was captained by Felipe Contepomi in his absence.
