Edinburgh Rugby (10) 32 - 24 (12) Leinster Rugby
Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh
Friday 24th September 2010, 19:05

Many were pessimistic about Leinsters chances before the season started, but even the most pessimistic among us wouldn't have thought that we would get to the end of September having only won a single game. It is important however to point out that in Michael Cheikas first month in charge, Leinsters record was only two wins from four, including a loss in Murrayfield.

It was the hosts who got off the mark first through a Chris Paterson penalty, it wasn't long however until the visitors took the lead through two Isa Nacewa penalties. Although Jonny Sexton had been named to start at ten, the Mary's man pulled out prior to kick off for the second time this season. Leinster went further ahead through a mammoth penalty by Rob Kearney from inside his own half.

Edinburgh's first try came through Geoff Cross after some excellent work by Scottish international scrum half Mike Blair. Paterson duly added the extras to give Edinburgh a one-point lead. Isa Nacewa once again took over the kicking duties and another penalty restored Leinsters lead to a two-point margin at the break.

The break did Leinster no favors however, as it was Edinburgh who started stronger in the second period. A try through Tim Visser, while breaking a Shane Horgan tackle followed quickly by Mark Robertson after some great work by Paterson. This left Leinster trailing 22-11 and looking down the barrel of another disappointing defeat.

It took another Edinburgh try, after great work by both Blair brothers, converted by David before Leinster switched on. At this point with the scores at 29-11, it was always going to be an uphill battle for Leinster to get back into it. A Jamie Heaslip try converted by Nacewa gave us some hope after another Paterson penalty. Rob Kearney then capped his 100th Leinster appearance with a try which gave substitute Ian Madigan the chance to at least secure a losing bonus point, the young out half however couldn't add the extras and Leinster finished another disappointing performance with nothing to show for it.

Next up is "the drive for five" against Munster. With over 47,000 tickets sold it promises to be a great occasion in the Aviva Stadium, however Leinsters current performances certainly wont match the occasion and a big improvement is needed. Perhaps more importantly however is our first Heineken Cup game in a couple of weeks time against Racing Metro. With the tough group we have been drawn in, only a win will suffice if we are to have any chance of progressing.
