Match Preview: Connacht Rugby vs Leinster Rugby

by Jim O'Connor, 2017-04-14

As predicted, there was a notable drop-off in intensity last week after the heroics against Wasps the week before. Leinster were patchy at best and were fortunate to escape with a win against the Ospreys, but it was a very valuable four points. It puts them nine points clear of the Ospreys in third and now they need just six points from the final three games to guarantee a home semi-final. A win against Connacht on Saturday will virtually clinch that home semi-final but Connacht will be determined to make things as hard as possible for Leinster.

While it was an up and down Six Nations championship for Ireland, it was pretty much perfect for Leinster.

From their four games they earned the maximum 20 points of the 20 available to take first place in the table. What's more, they scored another 27 tries in the four games to smash the overall try-scoring record for the regular season with five games left to play. Last time out against the Scarlets, they produced an outstanding second half to turn a tight match at half-time into another rout.

So last week's fearsome trip to Rodney Parade turned into a fairly jolly romp in the end as Leinster ran in eight tries against a hapless Dragons outfit that were booed off the pitch by their own fans.
