Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Benetton Treviso

by Jim O'Connor, 2012-02-08

After a three-week break, Leinster are back in action in the Pro12 against Italian side Benetton Treviso. Unfortunately because of TV scheduling, it's on a Thursday evening with a 7:05PM kick-off, which means the crowd will be greatly reduced from normal. Nevertheless it will provide a welcome distraction for the fans present from the latest wretched international display.

Leinster Rugby vs Montpellier Herault RC

by Jim O'Connor, 2012-01-20

Last week, Leinster won on the road and once again it wasn't pretty. Glasgow's record in Europe at Firhill is impressive and you can see why. The pitch is narrow, the ground is heavy and Glasgow are very well organised and conditioned. They were a lot cuter at the breakdown this time, slowing down Leinster's ball and they also shut down a lot of the main ball carriers.

Match Preview: Glasgow Warriors vs Leinster Rugby

Last week Leinster completed their 'Christmas Schedule' with three wins from three after a somewhat bizarre win in Cardiff. Leinster got off to a blistering start with two tries in ten minutes but spent the rest of the game battling against the Italian referee and the Welsh officials. Marius Metrea lived up to the stereotype of the hometown Italian ref by penalising Leinster relentlessly while turning a blind eye to Cardiff's antics at the breakdown. The Welsh TMO Neil Ballard's decision to award the Cardiff try, despite having no evidence of the ball being touched down, should be enough to ensure he's never trusted with the job again. It's a poor reflection on the league that such a collection of clowns can be entrusted with such a high profile game.

Match Preview: Cardiff Blues vs Leinster Rugby

by Jim O'Connor, 2012-01-06

Leinster take on Cardiff tomorrow evening with their unbeaten run still intact, but only just. As Miah Nikora's last-minute drop goal attempt drifted towards the posts, Joe Schmidt might have thought it was gone. It dropped short though and Leinster were relieved to hear the final whistle. If Nikora had made it though, it wouldn't have been an injustice and Leinster would have had only themselves to blame. They led 9-3 at half-time after playing into a strong wind and probably thought the job was largely done. They certainly played like that in the second half as their intensity dropped off and they let Connacht back into the game. The lineout was a disaster and the discipline was poor also.

Match Preview: Connacht Rugby vs Leinster Rugby

by Jim O'Connor, 2011-12-30

Leinster start the new year with a trip to Galway to face strugglers Connacht. The differences in the form guide between the two teams couldn't be starker though. Leinster are hoping to keep their unbeaten run going for a 13th match in a row stretching back to the home defeat against Glasgow in September. Poor Connacht on the other hand are desperately looking for a win to break an 11-match losing streak. They haven't won since beating the Dragons back in September and it's cast a shadow over a season that began with such excitement.
