Match Preview: Newport Gwent Dragons vs Leinster Rugby

by Jim O'Connor, 2011-03-25

With the Six Nations over, it's now all Leinster for the rest of the season with no more interruptions from those pesky men in green. Overall it was a disappointing championship for Ireland but at least they finished with a great win and performance against England. Now attention will switch to the Heineken Cup quarter-final against Leicester in the Aviva stadium which is coming up in two weeks time. However Leinster have to concentrate on the Magners League for now because the race for the top four is getting hot.

Weekly Preview: Six Nations Preview 2011 - Weekend Five

by Jim O'Connor, 2011-03-18

In what's been a pretty grim tournament all round in terms of quality and entertainment, the last half hour of the Italy - France match went some way towards restoring our faith in the Six Nations Championship. Joe Schmidt had his favourite boot returned to him when Declan Kidney favoured a certain American born fellow for the Irish number 10 jersey. The RDS lovingly welcomed back Mr Sexton with open arms. Also returning to the fortress from international duty were McFadden and Leo Cullen. All welcome additions at any stage, although the Leinster cubs were beginning to make a name for themselves.

Weekly Preview: Six Nations Preview 2011 - Weekend Four

by Jim O'Connor, 2011-03-10

So just two weeks of 2011 Six Nations championship left, and really it can't pass quick enough. The general quality of rugby on view has been pretty dire and if the Southern Hemisphere teams are staying awake long enough to watch it; they'll see nothing to alarm them for the World Cup. It feels almost treasonous saying it, but when set against the constant excitement and tension of the Heineken Cup, the Six Nations has largely become quite dull. Could the format be tweaked to enliven matters?

It's getting tight at the top!

With just six league games to go now for Leinster, the battle for that all-important top two spot is going to be tense. Another bonus point went begging last week against Treviso and with the Ospreys getting a five point haul against Connacht, they're now two points ahead of Leinster in second place. The Ospreys have a pretty reasonable run-in and can concentrate their full attention on the league, making them all the more dangerous.
