Match Preview: Glasgow Warriors vs Leinster Rugby

by Jim O'Connor, 2012-11-22

In the backdrop of the continuing Autumn International campaign, Leinster resume their season after three weeks off. Though the media probably won't attach too much importance to their trip to Glasgow, Leinster coach Joe Schmidt certainly won't be taking the game lightly. Firstly, Leinster have only two matches to get ready for the games which could well define their season, the Heineken Cup double-header against Clermont.

After Brian O'Driscoll teased us with fifteen minutes of top quality breaks and offloads last Saturday, his ankle ligaments gave out. With the agony he was in clearly visable on his face when it happened, the post-match spin that it was just a sprain sounded too good to be true. Unfortunately so it proved and it's surgery and 8-12 weeks out. Whatever about the autumn internationals, his loss for the Clermont double-header, along with Rob Kearney who was ruled out last week, is a massive blow.

Leinster did what they needed to against the Scarlets last week in that they got a vital win to keep themselves alive in the group. However considering the way they started in the first half, they may be a little disappointed that they didn't push on and win by an even bigger score and possibly even bag a bonus point too. The travelling Leinster fans were certainly pleased by the physical intensity their team showed as Leinster bullied the Scarlets at the breakdown and in the set-piece. The defence was also generally good too, aside from one highly uncharacteristic mistake from the greatest defensive outside centre the game has ever seen.

The good news: A much improved performance and a third win over Munster in a row.

The bad news: More bloody injuries!!

By the end of a match, Leinster had a back three of John Cooney, Ian Madigan and Fionn Carr with Noel Reid in the centre alongside Fergus McFadden. Not exactly a line-up to inspire defensive confidence. However, they hung on to close out the win and deny Munster even the consolation of a losing bonus point.

Leinster's performance last week against Connacht was simply unacceptable on every level. A defeat to Connacht in Galway is no disgrace, indeed Leinster were fortunate enough to win there last season. But the scale of the defeat (their heaviest in the league for five years) and manner of the performance was frankly shocking. Yes, it was a disrupted build-up to the match with the international camp early in the week and the injuries keep piling up, with three more players Gordon D'Arcy, Quinn Roux and Rob Kearney departing in the first quarter.
