It wasn't pretty last week but a young team got the win Leinster needed against Connacht to end their losing streak and keep them in touch with the top four. Once again, Glasgow, Munster and the Ospreys, Leinster's closest contenders at the moment, all won but the top two teams, Ulster and Scarlets, both lost. Ulster are still unlikely to be caught at the top but the Scarlets defeat means they are in big danger of slipping down, especially as they have to travel to Ravenhill to face the leaders tomorrow. There's only three points between second placed Scarlets and sixth placed Leinster which shows how competitive the battle for the top four is this season.

Leinster come into the second Christmas inter-pro desperate for a win. Three defeats in a row simply doesn't sit well and even if they came against two of the form teams in Europe in Clermont and Ulster, Leinster coach Joe Schmidt will be very anxious to get a win to restore morale. Leinster played some good rugby up in Ravenhill but once the scrum started to crumble there was only going to be one winner.

Let's be honest, we've been spoiled. Over the last couple of years Leinster have delivered so many big performances when required, especially at home, that maybe we, the supporters, have taken these deeds for granted. After the excellent performance away to Clermont fell just short of a win, Leinster fans were all fully confident that their team would do the business at the Aviva and win and win well.

Last Sunday's match was definitely filed under "the ones that got away".

If offered a losing bonus point before the game, most Leinster fans would have taken it. However, Leinster put in such a magnificently brave performance in Stade Marcel-Michelin that both players and supporters left the arena thinking of what might have been.
