Leinster Rugby 30 - 3 Ulster Rugby

A healthy crowd gathered on Sunday in Donnybrook for Leinster's first Interprovincial game of the season against Ulster. Among the interested onlookers was Tommy Bowe, in attendance to cheer on the Ulster women. Leinster were the more experienced side boasting 8 internationals while Ulster had 10 debutantes.

Leinster started the match with a strong intensity that didn't dim right to the final whistle. In the end Ulster couldn't live with the competitiveness of the Leinster women who dominated in the lineout, breakdown and scrum.

In total Leinster scored 5 tries and Nora Stapleton added a conversion and penalty. Leinster could have scored more tries with a bit of fortune and better handling. Ulster did register a score with the 3 points from the boot of Grace Davitt but never really had a chance to add further scores.

Leinster's first and third tries were virtual carbon copies. On both occasions Leinster mauled from a lineout win and Hooker Yvonne Nolan crossed over at the back to score a try. The second try was created by a steal at the Ulster lineout, the forwards set the platform and the ball was worked wide for Ciara Kennedy to cross over.

Leinster were working the ball wide consistently and a good back line move saw Tammy Breen go over for Leinster's fourth try. It was no more that the right wing deserved having gone close to a try on a couple of occasions in the first half.

Leinster's fifth try was created by a scintillating break by Amy Davis. Playing scrumhalf for Leinster Amy is ordinarily a winger and her raw pace was evident as she left the Ulster defence for dead. A desperate cover tackle prevented her from scoring herself but Deirdre O'Brien picked up the ball and finished the job under the posts. Nora Stapleton's conversion pushed the score to thirty points and a highly satisfying win was sealed. Leinster had the luxury of emptying the bench soon after and ensuring that all involved in the 22 got a run out.

The second game of the Interpro season follows next weekend against Connacht in Galway.
